France captain Kylian Mbappe celebrated his 100th international appearance in style on Monday, scoring twice to power France to a commanding 3–0 victory over Iraq in a FIFA World Cup clash disrupted by severe weather in Philadelphia.

The result strengthened France’s status as one of the tournament favourites and secured consecutive wins in Group I.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the 14th minute before adding his second shortly after the restart, while Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele completed the rout as France maintained their perfect start.

The Real Madrid forward’s latest brace took his World Cup tally to 16 goals, just two behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who earlier set a new tournament record of 18 goals after scoring twice against Austria.

Storm halts play

The match at Lincoln Financial Field kicked off under clear conditions but was interrupted at half-time after torrential rainfall and severe weather moved across Philadelphia.

Supporters inside the 68,000-capacity stadium were instructed to leave exposed seating sections and seek shelter, while players remained in the dressing room for more than two hours.

Strict weather protocols in the United States require suspension of sporting events when severe storm conditions are detected nearby.

Play eventually resumed after a lengthy delay.

Mbappe’s milestone night

Mbappe, who recently became France’s all-time leading scorer after surpassing Olivier Giroud’s previous record, delivered another clinical display.

His first goal came after controlling a forward pass before unleashing a powerful strike from outside the box that beat Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.

The French star now has 60 international goals from 100 appearances, with 16 arriving in only 16 World Cup matches.

France extended their lead in the 54th minute after Iraq gifted possession during a defensive error.

Defender Zaid Tahseen attempted to recycle a goal-kick back to goalkeeper Mr Basil, but the pass went astray, allowing Mr Dembele to set up Mr Mbappe for an easy finish.

France continued to dominate, with Michael Olise striking the crossbar before creating the third goal, which Mr Dembele finished clinically in the 66th minute.

France eye knockout stage

Head coach Didier Deschamps rotated his squad from the opening victory over Senegal, bringing in Bradley Barcola, Manu Kone and Lucas Digne.

The changes had little effect on France’s attacking rhythm as Les Bleus moved closer to sealing top spot in the group.

France are now set for a highly anticipated clash against Erling Haaland’s Norway in Boston on Friday and have already booked their place in the last 32.

Iraq face uphill battle

For Iraq, the defeat leaves qualification hopes hanging by a thread after a heavy opening loss to Norway.

Coach Graham Arnold’s side were further disrupted when captain Aymen Hussein was forced off injured in the first half.

The result means Iraq have now lost all five of their matches across two World Cup appearances spanning four decades.

Attention now turns to whether France’s in-form captain can continue his pursuit of another World Cup title and perhaps surpass Messi in the tournament’s all-time scoring race.
