The Yobe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted a consensus arrangement for its 2027 primary elections, covering governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly contests.

The decision was announced on Thursday in Damaturu by Senator Ahmed Lawan following a stakeholders’ meeting of the party.

Mr Lawan said the party opted for consensus over direct primaries, citing past success with the approach in the state.

“Out of the two modes specified by the Electoral Act — consensus and direct primary elections — Yobe APC has picked consensus,” he said.

“From our previous experience, consensus has always worked for us in this state. Any candidate that emerges… will receive the support of all in this party,” he added.

He noted that the party has internal mechanisms to engage and accommodate aspirants who may not emerge as candidates.

Endorsement of president Tinubu

At the same meeting, party stakeholders unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Senator Lawan further pledged that the party would mobilise massive electoral support for the president.

“We will deliver 3.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election, alongside strong support for our candidates at all levels,” he said.

Government performance cited

Speaking at the meeting, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni attributed the party’s endorsement to what he described as the positive impact of federal government policies and programmes in the state.

He said Yobe had benefited from various development initiatives under the current administration, reinforcing the party’s support for continuity.

The adoption of consensus reflects a strategic effort by the party to maintain unity and avoid internal conflicts ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers note that consensus arrangements, while often reducing intra-party disputes, may also limit competitive internal democracy depending on implementation.
