The Federal Government has congratulated Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu on his confirmation as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football, CAF.

The National Sports Commission described the appointment as recognition of Mr Adamu’s experience, competence and steady progression within the continental football governing body.

Mr Adamu, who had served as acting General Secretary since March 2026, was confirmed by the CAF Executive Committee following a competitive recruitment process.

His confirmation makes him the first Nigerian to occupy the position in CAF’s 70-year history.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko congratulated Mr Adamu, saying his elevation demonstrated the capacity of Nigerian sports administrators to contribute to leadership at continental and international levels.

“Samson’s confirmation recognises the experience he has built within CAF. We congratulate him and wish him every success,” Mr Dikko said.

He added that the appointment would encourage greater participation by Nigerians in international sports administration and strengthen the country’s sports diplomacy and relationships across Africa.

Eight years of CAF experience

Mr Adamu joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions and later became Director of Tournaments and Events.

He has been involved in the organisation and delivery of major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, before becoming acting General Secretary following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba in March.

A graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, Mr Adamu will oversee CAF’s day-to-day administration and support the implementation of the organisation’s strategic priorities.

Nigeria to host major CAF events

Mr Dikko also highlighted Nigeria’s preparations to host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Abuja on 21 November 2026, and the CAF Awards in Lagos on 10 December.

He said the events demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to sustained cooperation with CAF and could create opportunities for Nigerian businesses in hospitality, tourism, transport and media.

“The Federal Government remains committed to working with CAF to advance football and develop its commercial value,” he said.

Mr Dikko urged young Nigerians interested in sports administration to draw inspiration from Mr Adamu’s career, describing his progress as an example of what experience, competence and integrity can achieve.
