The All Progressives Congress has scheduled Saturday, 22 August 2026, for its primary elections to select candidates for four restored State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states, as well as legislative bye-elections in Gombe, Bauchi, Delta and Kano states.

The party announced the schedule in a timetable signed by its National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, and released on Wednesday.

The APC said the timetable followed the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission to restore four previously suppressed State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states.

The affected constituencies are Abraka, Isoko North II and Ughelli South II in Delta State, and Yagba West II in Kogi State.

Bye-elections included in APC schedule

The party’s timetable also covers legislative bye-elections in four states.

They include:

  • Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, Gombe State
  • Disina State Constituency, Bauchi State
  • Sakwa State Constituency, Bauchi State
  • Udu State Constituency, Delta State
  • Dawakin Kudu State Constituency, Kano State

The Gombe federal constituency became vacant following the death of lawmaker Tongo Yaya.

Forms, screening and primary dates

According to the timetable, the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms began on Tuesday, 18 August and will close on Thursday, 20 August.

The deadline for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents is also 20 August.

The APC scheduled the screening of aspirants, publication of screening results and screening appeals for Friday, 21 August, ahead of the primaries on 22 August.

Election appeals are scheduled for Monday, 24 August.

APC announces nomination fees

The party fixed the expression of interest fee for State House of Assembly aspirants at N1m, while the nomination fee is N5m, bringing the total to N6m.

For House of Representatives aspirants, the expression of interest fee is N1m, while the nomination fee is N9m, bringing the total to N10m.

The APC said female, youth and physically challenged aspirants would pay the full expression of interest fee but only 50 per cent of the prescribed nomination fee.

It also directed aspirants to make all payments in full directly into the party’s designated bank account.

Why the constituencies were restored

The development follows INEC’s restoration of the four previously suppressed constituencies in Delta and Kogi after court judgments.

The constituencies had remained suppressed for years, leaving residents without direct representation in their respective State Houses of Assembly.

The APC’s schedule therefore combines the process of filling the restored legislative seats with preparations for the forthcoming bye-elections across Gombe, Bauchi, Delta and Kano states.

What it means for voters

The primaries will determine the APC candidates who will contest the affected legislative seats.

For residents of the restored constituencies, the process is particularly significant because it marks a step towards restoring direct representation in their State Houses of Assembly after years without elected representatives.

The 22 August exercise will also provide an early test of the APC’s internal electoral processes ahead of the broader political activity surrounding the 2027 general elections.
