Arsenal Agree £75m Deal to Sign Newcastle Captain Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães in a deal worth £75 million.

The 28-year-old, who captained Newcastle last season, has been granted permission to travel for a medical after both clubs agreed on the transfer fee. An official announcement is expected once the remaining formalities are completed.

Guimarães had two years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park, with Newcastle also holding an option to extend his stay by an additional year. Despite the club’s desire to retain one of its most influential players, Arsenal’s offer proved enough to secure an agreement.

The transfer marks another significant departure from Newcastle during what has been a dramatic summer at the club. Anthony Gordon has already completed a £69.3 million move to Barcelona, while Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur in a deal reportedly worth £100 million.

Should Guimarães’ transfer be completed, Newcastle will have generated more than £240 million from player sales during the current transfer window, providing the club with substantial financial flexibility ahead of the new season.

The changes at St James’ Park have extended beyond the playing squad. Former manager Eddie Howe departed the club earlier this summer, with German coach Matthias Jaissle appointed as his successor on a four-year contract.

For Arsenal, the signing would represent another major statement in the transfer market as Mikel Arteta continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Guimarães is expected to add creativity, defensive stability and leadership to an already competitive midfield.

Neither Arsenal nor Newcastle had officially confirmed the transfer at the time of writing, with the deal expected to be finalised following the player’s medical and the completion of contractual formalities.
