BREAKING: Army announces major shake-up, appoints new GOCs, Commanders

The Nigerian Army has announced a major reshuffle of its senior officers, introducing new appointments across operational commands, training institutions and strategic staff positions as part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve operational effectiveness nationwide.

The changes were disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.

According to the statement, the redeployment affects General Officers Commanding, field commanders, commandants of military institutions and principal staff officers at Army Headquarters.

The statement noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, approved the strategic postings to enhance the Army’s readiness and strengthen its capacity to address evolving security challenges.

Key operational appointments

Under the new deployment, Major General WM Dangana has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE, replacing Major General EF Oyinlola.

Major General EI Okoro was also appointed General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander of Joint Task Force South-South Operation DELTA SAFE, succeeding Major General EE Emeka.

Major General JR Lar was named Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, while Brigadier General OM Oyekola was appointed Acting Military Secretary (Army).

The Army also retained Brigadier General I Waziri as Chief of Staff in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff.

Strengthening operations and technology

As part of moves to reinforce operational command and combat effectiveness, Brigadier General IB Buhari was appointed Commander of Headquarters 63 Brigade, while Brigadier General K Rabiu will now head Headquarters 31 Artillery Brigade.

In a notable development reflecting the military’s increasing focus on technology and emerging threats, Major General SA Emmanuel has been appointed Commander of the Nigerian Army Space Command.

The statement said the appointment reinforces the Army’s growing commitment to technology-driven security operations and emerging warfare domains.

Major General O Adegbe was also appointed Director of Intelligence and Security at Defence Headquarters.

Training, doctrine and institutional appointments

The reshuffle also affected military education and institutional leadership.

Major General KE Chigbu was appointed Deputy Commandant of the National Defence College.

Major General SD Makolo emerged as Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armour School.

Major General SO Adejimi was named Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport, while Major General FS Etim became Chief of Training at Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Nigerian Army.

Brigadier General U Ahmad was appointed Commandant of Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria.

Additional strategic appointments

The Army also announced appointments into military-linked institutions.

Major General KO Ukandu was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Post Housing Development Limited.

Major General AI Allison was named Managing Director of Defence Properties Limited.

The Army leadership urged all newly appointed officers to justify the confidence placed in them through professionalism, innovation and commitment to national service.

“The COAS charged the newly appointed senior officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by demonstrating exemplary leadership, professionalism, innovation and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate,” the statement said.

It added that the Nigerian Army remains committed to building a professional, combat-ready and people-oriented force capable of addressing present and future security challenges.
