France and the United Kingdom are set to chair a 40-nation meeting aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in the region.

The meeting, scheduled for Friday, is expected to signal to the United States that key allies are prepared to support maritime security efforts once conditions stabilise.

Tensions in the strategic waterway have intensified following its effective closure by Iran to non-Iranian vessels after U.S.-Israeli airstrikes began on February 28.

The situation worsened after the United States imposed a blockade on ships entering or leaving Iranian ports, further raising global concerns over trade disruptions.

US President Donald Trump has called on allied nations to support the blockade, criticising NATO partners for their reluctance.

However, European countries have resisted involvement, warning that participation could draw them directly into the conflict.

Post-conflict focus

Instead, Britain, France and other allies have indicated readiness to support efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz after a ceasefire or end to hostilities.

Diplomatic sources said the proposed mission currently excludes both the United States and Iran, although coordination with both nations would ultimately be necessary.

Washington is expected to be briefed on the outcome of the talks.

Economic concerns

The discussions will also address the broader economic implications of the crisis, including disruptions to global shipping and the plight of more than 20,000 seafarers stranded in the region.

Participants are expected to reaffirm commitment to freedom of navigation and adherence to international law, while exploring options for a defensive multinational mission.

According to diplomatic notes, the proposed operation would focus on safeguarding maritime traffic through intelligence sharing, mine-clearing operations, and potential military escorts.

A joint statement is expected at the end of the meeting, though specific national contributions may not be disclosed.

Global participation

The meeting in Paris will be attended by key leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Officials from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are also expected to join virtually, while China has been invited but has yet to confirm participation.

Uncertain outlook

Diplomats cautioned that the mission may not materialise if normal shipping operations resume quickly, though industry players may push for deployment to restore confidence during any transition period.

Britain noted that the outcome of the talks would feed into a broader multinational military planning meeting scheduled for next week.
