Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured residents that the ongoing reconstruction of the Rivers State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt will be completed and ready for use by the first quarter of 2027.
The governor made the declaration on Monday after inspecting the expansive renovation project located in the Old Government Residential Area (Old GRA) axis of Port Harcourt, as part of efforts to assess the pace and quality of work at the site.
The update was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Onwuka Nzeshi.
Governor Fubara explained that although he had been observing visible changes from the exterior of the complex, he returned to personally assess the extent of work being done internally.
“We just did a tour of the renovation of the Secretariat. I have been seeing the outer part of it wearing a new look, but I wanted to really confirm how much work is going on, most importantly, the inside, and that is what I just went to inspect myself.” he said.
Following the inspection, he expressed confidence that the project would be completed and officially handed over to the government by early 2027.
“I think that with the progress of work here, by the grace of God, I believe that by the first quarter of next year, it will be handed over to the government.”
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing all ongoing projects across the state.
“Like I promised, every job that we are handling, we will ensure that we bring them to completion.”
Massive upgrade of historic state secretariat
The Rivers State Secretariat was originally built in the 1970s, shortly after the creation of Rivers State in 1967, and has served as a key administrative hub for decades.
The upgraded structure is a massive government complex comprising multiple high-rise buildings, including:
- 17-storey Point Block
- 10-storey Podium Block
- Three additional seven-storey buildings tagged Blocks A, B and C
The reconstruction is described as a comprehensive modernization project aimed at improving the overall efficiency and functionality of the state’s administrative infrastructure.
Modern facilities and Tech-driven work environment
According to the government, the renovation goes beyond cosmetic upgrades and includes major structural rehabilitation across the complex.
The project involves:
- Rehabilitating aging structures
- Improved office layouts
- Installation of modern facilities
- Upgrading utilities and support systems
- Improved workspace efficiency
- Technology-driven infrastructure for civil servants
The administration said the redesigned secretariat is expected to create a more conducive, efficient, and modern work environment for public servants in Rivers State.
The secretariat reconstruction is part of broader infrastructure and administrative renewal efforts under Governor Fubara’s administration, with emphasis on completing legacy and ongoing government projects.
His latest inspection reflects a renewed focus on monitoring execution timelines and ensuring major public infrastructure projects are delivered as promised.
