Yekini Idiaye has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.
Idiaye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency I, took over after Agbebaku stepped down amid moves by lawmakers to impeach him.
Seventeen of the Assembly’s 24 lawmakers were reportedly said to have signed an impeachment notice against Agbebaku before his resignation.
Idiaye’s emergence followed the Assembly’s zoning arrangement, which provides for an Edo North lawmaker to become Speaker when the governor is from Edo Central.
After his emergence, Idiaye and other lawmakers visited Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House to formally notify him of the leadership change.
The development puts Idiaye at the centre of Edo’s political spotlight as he begins his tenure leading the state legislature.
