Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly in the northern region, describing him as an “asset, not a liability” to the North.
Amid growing concerns and criticism over the persistent insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria—including the resurgence of banditry, kidnappings, and attacks by armed groups—some critics have questioned the effectiveness of the Tinubu administration’s approach. However, Matawalle has pushed back against these narratives, affirming that the President remains dedicated to restoring peace and stability across the region.

Speaking in response to recent claims suggesting that the North is being neglected or shortchanged under Tinubu’s leadership, Matawalle stated that such assertions are unfounded and politically motivated. He emphasized that the President has consistently prioritized security issues in the North and has provided strategic directives to military and security agencies to respond swiftly and decisively to emerging threats.
“President Tinubu is not a liability to the North, as some would claim. On the contrary, he is a strong ally and a committed leader who understands the depth of our security challenges and is working tirelessly to address them,” Matawalle said.
The minister noted that under Tinubu’s administration, there has been increased investment in military infrastructure, procurement of modern equipment, and the reorganization of the country’s security architecture—all aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and criminality.
Matawalle also urged northern leaders and citizens to support the administration’s efforts and refrain from politicizing security issues. He called for unity in addressing the common enemy of violence and instability, which he said transcends political affiliations and regional boundaries.
While security remains a key concern for many Nigerians—particularly in the wake of recent violent attacks in Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, and Zamfara States—the Federal Government maintains that it is taking strategic steps to improve the situation.
As the Tinubu administration continues its second year in office, national security remains a defining issue for its performance, especially in regions that have long suffered from violence and displacement. Supporters like Matawalle argue that patience, collaboration, and sustained effort are required to yield long-term results.
