President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The announcement was made on Friday during the President’s Democracy Day address, where he paid tribute to key figures who played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic development.

Mr Tinubu said the decision was taken in recognition of the contributions of the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua to Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democratic governance.

Tinubu honours Yar’Adua’s democratic legacy

Speaking during the national broadcast, the President described General Yar’Adua as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose vision helped shape the country’s democratic journey.

“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership.

“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the completed Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology,” Mr Tinubu stated.

Democracy day honours for June 12 heroes

The President also announced national honours for more than 30 democracy activists, pro-democracy advocates and soldier-democrats associated with the June 12 struggle.

Among those to receive posthumous recognition are Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.

According to the President, the full list of recipients will be released in the coming days as part of activities commemorating Democracy Day.

Recognition of democratic contributions

The renaming of the institution forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to honour individuals who played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

General Yar’Adua remains widely remembered for his political influence, advocacy for national unity and contributions to democratic reforms before his death.

The newly renamed university is expected to focus on geological sciences, engineering technology and petroleum-related studies while preserving the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most influential political and military figures.
