The G20 agricultural working group, currently convening in Durban, is focusing on macroeconomic factors influencing food prices and market access, both locally and globally.
During the opening of the three-day session, South Africa’s Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, called for collective action to address climate change and food insecurity.
He emphasized the crucial role of technology transfer and innovation in fostering sustainable agro-industrial development.
“We are committed to ensuring this working group becomes a platform for collective ambition, practical collaboration, and long-term transformation,” Steenhuisen remarked.
He further stressed the need for building food systems that boost productivity while preserving ecosystems.
This meeting is part of South Africa’s G20 presidency, which began in December 2024, under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted that South Africa’s key priorities include supporting the Global South, enhancing access to development finance, and focusing on climate adaptation.
