The Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, 17 June 2026, a public holiday across the state in commemoration of Hijira 1448AH, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe.

Mr Aderibigbe said the annual observance represents the commencement of a new Islamic calendar year and offers an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and peaceful coexistence.

“Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday, 17th June 2026, will be observed as a Public Holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448AH.

“This celebration marks the beginning of Islamic New Year.

“Consequently, on behalf of Osun State Government, I extend warm greetings to our Muslim brothers and sisters as we celebrate Hijira 1448AH.

“May this occasion bring peace, prosperity and unity to our great State,” the statement read in part.

Call for peace and unity

The state government also urged residents to celebrate responsibly and avoid actions capable of disrupting peaceful coexistence.

Mr Aderibigbe encouraged citizens to embrace harmony and participate in activities that strengthen community ties and social cohesion.

“Residents are encouraged to shun rancour and disharmony and joyfully participate in festivities and celebrations promoting unity and togetherness,” the statement added.

Background

The Islamic calendar entered the year 1448 AH on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, following the sighting of the Muharram crescent moon.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Islamic calendar follows a lunar cycle and serves as the official religious calendar for Muslims worldwide. The beginning of Muharram is regarded as one of the most significant periods in the Islamic calendar and symbolises spiritual renewal and remembrance.

Public holidays to mark the Islamic New Year are observed in several Muslim-majority regions and communities, with governments often using the occasion to promote peace, cultural identity, and interfaith unity.
