Promoter Eddie Hearn has ruled out Deontay Wilder as a potential opponent for Anthony Joshua, despite recent speculation linking both heavyweights.

Mr Hearn disclosed that while Mr Joshua has been offered a return to the ring in July, the proposed deal does not include a bout against Mr Wilder.

The offer is part of a two-fight arrangement tied to Riyadh Season, with a potential blockbuster clash against Tyson Fury scheduled for November.

“The deal that we have been offered to fight in July and then fight Tyson Fury in November is not with Deontay Wilder in mind,” Mr Hearn said.

“The powers that be don’t really want us to be in that type of fight.”

Fight plan

Mr Hearn explained that the structure of the deal is designed to lead Mr Joshua into a high-profile showdown with Mr Fury, without risking the matchup through a dangerous interim opponent.

“This is an offer that has been made… and that looks like the route that we will take,” he said.

The arrangement is reportedly being driven by stakeholders including Riyadh Season and Ring Magazine.

Wilder sidelined

Mr Wilder had recently reignited talks of a potential clash after calling out Mr Joshua following his win over Derek Chisora.

However, Mr Hearn suggested that such a fight is unlikely under the current agreement.

“We have no problem fighting Wilder, but I don’t think it will be Wilder under the basis of this deal,” he added.

Joshua’s return

Mr Joshua, who has been inactive since his knockout victory in December, is now expected to take a lower-risk bout in July as part of preparations for a possible career-defining fight later in the year.

The anticipated clash with Mr Fury remains one of the most sought-after matchups in heavyweight boxing.
