A political pressure group, the G-100, has described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in Osun State as a potential template for opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.
The group urged opposition leaders to put aside individual ambitions and party differences and unite around what it described as a common political objective.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Mr Salihu Lukman on behalf of the G-100, the group congratulated Adeleke and commended the people of Osun State for what it described as their determination and courage during the governorship election.
The statement followed the declaration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the 15 August Osun governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The call also comes as political parties and opposition groups increasingly position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with questions surrounding possible alliances, candidate selection and the ability of opposition forces to consolidate their support.
G-100 sees Osun result as 2027 template
The group said the significance of the Osun election extended beyond Adeleke’s return to office, arguing that the outcome demonstrated what opposition forces could achieve when they overcome divisions and consolidate their support behind a common candidate.
“The significance of what has happened in Osun goes far beyond the re-election of one governor. Osun has provided a template for 2027,” the G-100 said.
According to the organisation, the opposition’s biggest challenge ahead of the 2027 elections is not necessarily a lack of popular support but the fragmentation among political parties and their leaders.
“For weeks now, the G-100 has argued that Nigeria’s opposition does not suffer from a shortage of popular support. Its greatest challenge is fragmentation,” it said.
Opposition urged to put aside personal ambitions
The group noted that several opposition candidates and political leaders in Osun recognised the wider implications of the election and set aside their individual ambitions to support Adeleke.
It described the decision as an example of political maturity and a willingness to place what it called the larger democratic interest above personal and party ambitions.
“Their decision was an affirmation that there are moments when the greater democratic interest must come before the ambitions of any individual or political party,” the group said.
The G-100 argued that the Osun experience provided a practical example of how opposition forces could combine their structures, supporters and political strengths to challenge the ruling party.
It said the candidates who stepped down in favour of Adeleke were each entitled to pursue their political ambitions but instead considered what outcome would best serve the electorate.
“The governorship candidates who stepped down and supported Governor Adeleke were each entitled to pursue their own ambitions. They chose instead to ask a more important question: what outcome best serves the people and strengthens the democratic cause?” the group said.
How the Osun experience could affect 2027
The G-100 urged opposition leaders seeking to challenge the APC in 2027 to apply the same approach at the national level.
The group argued that political parties would need to overcome their differences and negotiate if they genuinely wanted to present a strong alternative to the ruling party.
“Nigeria is bigger than any candidate, any ambition and any political party,” the statement read.
For Nigerian voters, the argument puts the focus on whether opposition parties can translate growing political competition into a coordinated national alternative rather than dividing their support among multiple candidates.
The group maintained that the success of such an approach would ultimately depend on political leaders being willing to make compromises and place voters’ interests above individual ambitions.
G-100 calls for national opposition alliance
The organisation challenged opposition leaders who believe Nigeria needs a different political direction in 2027 to demonstrate the same “courage, restraint and willingness to compromise” it said were displayed by opposition actors in Osun.
According to the group, the Osun election showed that cooperation among opposition forces could produce a viable alternative when political leaders were prepared to compromise.
“Osun has shown the pathway. The task now is to take that spirit of cooperation to the national stage,” it said.
Adeleke defeats APC in 19 LGAs
Adeleke, who contested on the platform of the Accord Party, defeated Mr Bola Oyebamiji of the APC in 19 of the 30 local government areas in the state.
The G-100 said the outcome should serve as more than a victory for one candidate, describing it as a lesson for opposition forces on the importance of cooperation ahead of 2027.
Whether the Osun experience can be successfully replicated at the national level, however, will depend on the willingness of opposition leaders and parties to resolve their differences, negotiate common interests and unite behind a shared political objective.
