Niklas Süle has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season, bringing an early end to his career at the age of 30.
The Borussia Dortmund defender confirmed the decision after suffering a knee injury during last month’s Bundesliga clash against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast on Wednesday, the Germany international revealed that he initially feared he had suffered a third anterior cruciate ligament rupture, an injury that had previously disrupted his career.
Injury scare triggered retirement decision
Mr Süle said the emotional impact of the injury scare forced him to reconsider his future in football.
“I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes,” he said, recalling the moment he believed the injury was another ACL tear.
Although subsequent MRI scans confirmed the injury was not as severe as initially feared, Mr Süle said he had already made up his mind to retire.
“When I went for the MRI the next day and received the good news… it was 1,000% clear to me that it was over,” he stated.
He explained that he could no longer face the physical and emotional strain of another lengthy rehabilitation process.
Career shaped by success and injuries
Mr Süle will remain under contract with Borussia Dortmund until 30 June, after which he will officially step away from professional football.
During his career, he won five Bundesliga titles with FC Bayern Munich and was part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2020.
At international level, the defender earned 49 caps for Germany national football team, representing his country at two FIFA World Cups and helping Germany win the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Emotional farewell
Mr Süle admitted he had begun looking forward to life beyond football, including spending more time with his family and children.
“I couldn’t imagine anything worse than… having to process my third cruciate ligament tear,” he said.
His retirement marks the end of a career widely regarded as one of great promise but repeatedly interrupted by injury setbacks and difficult recoveries.
