Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said no final decision has been taken regarding his political future, confirming ongoing consultations with leaders of the National Democratic Congress and the Peoples Redemption Party.

Mr Kwankwaso, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, made this known in a statement shared on his X account on Saturday amid growing speculation about possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We have noted recent media reports… suggesting a possible realignment… I wish to state categorically that no final decision has been taken regarding my political future or that of my political associates,” he said.

Mr Kwankwaso linked the uncertainty to ongoing legal challenges within the ADC, including a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee but returned aspects of the dispute to the High Court.

He also cited a separate decision by the Federal High Court invalidating the party’s convention, alongside a move by the Attorney General of the Federation seeking the party’s deregistration.

“This has left the party in a precarious position,” Mr Kwankwaso said.

Broad consultations underway

The former governor revealed that consultations are ongoing with multiple stakeholders to determine the next course of action.

“We have commenced wide-ranging consultations… to explore the best options for protecting our democratic interests,” he stated, adding that a decision would be announced soon.

Mr Kwankwaso noted that the situation mirrors the legal crises that forced him and his allies out of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

2027 presidential ambition

Addressing speculation about the 2027 presidential race, Kwankwaso said he has neither declared interest nor endorsed any candidate.

He referenced his past participation in presidential primaries, including finishing second to Muhammadu Buhari in the 2014 APC primary and later supporting the eventual winner.

He also recalled contesting the 2019 PDP primary before backing Atiku Abubakar.

“I have always placed national interest and party unity above personal ambition,” he said.

Party position and clarifications

Mr Kwankwaso emphasised that the ADC has yet to zone its presidential ticket or decide on a candidate, describing ongoing speculation as premature.

He also explained that his absence from recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to personal commitments, which he said were duly communicated to party leadership.

“Any definitive position on our political direction will be communicated formally through official channels at the appropriate time,” he added.
