The Independent National Electoral Commission has formally recognised Hakeem Baba-Ahmed as the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, one month after the party’s national convention held in Abuja.

The electoral body updated its official portal on Friday to reflect the newly elected National Working Committee, ending days of uncertainty and internal agitation within the party.

The PRP had elected Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to Vice-President Kashim Shettima, during its convention on 28 March 2026.

However, despite INEC monitoring the exercise, the commission initially failed to upload the names of the new executives, triggering concern among party members.

The situation escalated after the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, publicly raised alarm over the omission, while Baba-Ahmed issued a statement questioning the delay.

“The absence of the names… does not represent any legal hindrance for it to operate,” Baba-Ahmed said, assuring members of the party’s legitimacy.

Backlash and resolution

The delay sparked backlash from aggrieved members, many of whom expressed frustration on social media over what they described as unnecessary uncertainty.

Barely 24 hours after the outcry intensified, INEC updated its records to include Baba-Ahmed and other members of the party’s leadership.

Those recognised include National Secretary Kanu Uchenna, National Treasurer Bayawo Abdullahi, National Financial Secretary Chuka Patrick, and National Legal Adviser Vincent Okudu.

The update signals INEC’s formal recognition of the PRP’s new leadership, effectively resolving the controversy surrounding the party’s convention.

The PRP, one of Nigeria’s oldest political parties, now moves forward with its leadership structure clarified ahead of upcoming political activities.
