Nigerians have expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The peace accord is aimed at encouraging political parties and their candidates to promote peaceful campaigns, reject violence and respect the democratic process before, during and after the elections.

Tinubu was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. However, the President’s absence has raised questions about the government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, criticised the President’s absence, saying it could send the wrong signal to Nigerians, political actors and security agencies.

For many Nigerians, the importance of the accord goes beyond political leaders. A peaceful election directly affects voters, families and communities, particularly in a country where election-related violence has previously caused loss of lives and property.

With the 2027 elections approaching, citizens are looking to political leaders to prioritise peace, credible elections and the protection of voters’ rights. The signing of the accord is therefore seen as an opportunity for political actors to assure Nigerians that their participation in the democratic process will be protected.

As campaigns and political activities increase, Nigerians will be watching not only the promises made by politicians but also the actions taken to ensure that the next election is peaceful and credible.
