The Independent National Electoral Commission will on Tuesday, 6 October, hold a national stakeholders’ meeting and World Press Conference as the 2027 general elections enter the final 100-day countdown, with the commission expected to give Nigerians an update on its preparedness for the polls.
The engagement will focus on key areas including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, as INEC moves into a critical stage of preparations for the elections.
The meeting, scheduled for 10am at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, will be addressed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, alongside other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
INEC said the briefing is intended to provide Nigerians and other key actors with a clearer picture of how prepared the commission is as the elections draw closer.
“The Commission will provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process,” the commission said.
Stakeholders to participate
The engagement will bring together political party leaders, security agencies participating in the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations and election observer groups.
Disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives are also expected to participate.
INEC said the national stakeholders’ meeting is intended to strengthen collaboration with institutions and groups whose activities are central to the conduct and security of the elections.
“The national stakeholders’ meeting underlines the Commission’s commitment to absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem,” it said.
The meeting comes as INEC faces the task of completing its logistical, administrative and technological arrangements ahead of the 2027 polls.
The commission has already published an electoral timetable, with preparations covering party primaries, candidate nominations and other pre-election activities.
With the election now entering its final 100-day stretch, issues such as the accuracy of the voters’ register, candidate lists, deployment of electoral materials and the credibility of the election process are expected to attract greater public attention.
No timetable changes announced
INEC has not indicated that it will announce any changes to the electoral timetable at Tuesday’s meeting.
The commission said, however, that Amupitan would address the gathering alongside other key stakeholders, giving political parties, security agencies and civil society groups an opportunity to engage in the state of preparations.
For voters, the briefing provides an opportunity to hear directly from the electoral body about whether the systems being put in place are capable of delivering a credible election.
The commission’s preparations will ultimately determine how easily Nigerians can verify their voter information, participate in the election and have confidence that their votes will be properly handled.
INEC said the event will be broadcast live on major national television networks and streamed on its official social media platforms, allowing Nigerians who are not physically present in Abuja to follow the proceedings.
Attendance at the venue will be strictly by invitation, with accredited journalists and invited guests required to present their invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
