The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is unsettled by the growing popularity of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party claimed the Federal Government’s recent criticism of Makinde reflected anxiety within the Presidency over his political influence.

The statement followed comments by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Daniel Bwala, who, during a media interview on Monday, dismissed Makinde and the APM as insignificant in the 2027 presidential race.

Reacting, the APM described the remarks as unfortunate, arguing that the Tinubu administration had resorted to personal attacks instead of addressing issues affecting Nigerians.

The party further criticised Mr Bwala, saying his comments reflected the Presidency’s inability to defend its record in office.

According to the APM, the 2027 presidential contest would be between Governor Makinde and President Tinubu, expressing confidence that Makinde would emerge victorious.

The statement claimed Mr Makinde’s performance in Oyo State, particularly in economic development and governance, had positioned him as a preferred alternative for many Nigerians.

The party also argued that Nigerians were increasingly seeking a change in leadership, citing concerns over the economy, security, infrastructure, unemployment and corruption.

APM maintained that it would not engage in personal attacks, insisting its focus remained on presenting its vision and policies to Nigerians.

The party further claimed that Makinde enjoys widespread support, particularly among young Nigerians, and dismissed suggestions that its presidential candidate was politically inconsequential.
