At least two people have died during mass celebrations in Mexico City following Mexico’s qualification for the next round of the World Cup.

The fatalities were confirmed by local authorities on Wednesday after large crowds gathered across the city to celebrate the national team’s victory.

According to the city’s health ministry, the victims were a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, both of whom reportedly died from asphyxiation.

Authorities said they had not confirmed reports circulating in local media regarding a possible third fatality.

The celebrations followed Mexico’s victory over Ecuador, a result that secured the country’s first World Cup knockout qualification since 1986 and sent the co-host nation into the Round of 16.

Crowds estimated at more than one million people reportedly filled major parts of the capital, with the largest gatherings concentrated around the Angel of Independence.

Emergency and security personnel were deployed to manage the large turnout as authorities continued monitoring the aftermath of the celebrations.
