Spanish La Liga side Villarreal CF have signed Beninese striker Merveille Akinocho from Nigerian football academy Beyond Limits on a long-term deal.
The Ikenne-based academy announced the transfer on Tuesday, describing it as a major step in the 18-year-old forward’s career as he moves to European football.
“From Beyond Limits to the Yellow Submarine. Merveille Akinocho has officially signed for Spanish side Villarreal CF on a long-term deal,” the academy announced.
Akinocho joins Villarreal U-19 team
Akinocho will initially join Villarreal’s Under-19 team, where he is expected to continue his development and adapt to European football.
The move could also provide opportunities for him to feature in competitions such as the UEFA Youth League as he works towards breaking into the club’s senior team.
The Beninese forward had reportedly attracted interest from the Spanish club before turning 18, but had to wait until reaching the required age before completing the move, in line with regulations governing international transfers of underage players.
Impressive record at Beyond Limits
Akinocho made his mark during his time with Beyond Limits, featuring in the Creative Championship League, where he scored 12 goals and provided three assists last season.
He also helped the Nigerian academy secure titles in the Creative Championship, TCC Cup and TCC Super Cup.
His transfer represents another European opportunity for a player developed through Nigeria’s grassroots football system.
